Four events, one a month from January to April, will explore affordable housing, nonprofit leadership, education reform, and government service. Expected to be held in the Science Center, the events are intended for students, but we also hope to be able to offer recordings of them online.

Making good on its mission of bringing alumni to service, PBHA and PBHA-Alumni worked with the Harvard Alumni Association to develop a week-long service trip this spring for alumni (and their children) to East New Orleans, LA from March 14-21, 2010 where Alumni worked with Dillard University to paint a newly renovated community center in the Seventh Ward.

The enormous contributions and positive experience of the group have convinced the PBHA-Alumni and HAA that our collaborative effort in providing service trips for alumni is a worthwhile endeavor. Nick “Bubba” Harris and Dillard University are similarly enthusiastic about continuing this relationship, and we will be working early this summer about service trip offerings for next year.

Check out pictures from this year’s trip: http://picasaweb.google.com/PBHAphotos/PBHAA#

A great recap of the trip is on Kristen’s HAA Travels Blog:

Finally, the group was visited by a CBS Affiliate in New Orleans (WWLTV):

UPCOMING SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES IN APRIL
*Volunteer with the HAA Global Month of Service (17 cities worldwide).
*Join PBHA on April 27 for its Auction to Benefit the Summer Urban Program.

PBHA and PBHA-A gave a warm welcome to leading educational thinker and charter school founder Geoffrey Canada on the Friday of the alumni weekend, when he met with students in workshops before delivering his inspirational Coles Lecture that night. His speech drew 1000 people to Memorial Church, a crowd that included President Faust, Robert Coles and local notables, but mostly students as well as a number of parents in town for the Freshman Parents Weekend. Informative and impassioned, Canada’s talk critiqued America’s current education system and challenged the audience to help reform it. You can read The Crimson’s more in-depth coverage here.

On Saturday afternoon, at the Annual Meeting of members, attendees welcomed new officers Trevor Cox ’01-’02, President, and Zach Lazar ’04, Treasurer; they replace Walter Birge and Toby Romer, who deserve our warmest thanks for all their work to get the organization off the ground. Members also discussed a proposed bylaws change—extending PBHA-A membership eligibility to all Harvard alumni, not just those that were formerly PBHA volunteers—that was subsequently passed by the PBHA-A Board of Directors.

Saturday afternoon also featured a well-attended career panel composed of a number of PBHA alumni. An orientation for PBHA-A’s mentoring program concluded the afternoon programming. At the banquet and awards ceremony Saturday evening, honorees Farah Stockman ’96 and Allan Powell of the Harvard COOP gave heartwarming acceptance speeches. Sunday morning saw alums participate in a “fun run” along the Charles River and attend the light brunch at PBH marking the end of the weekend.

As we plan for the 2010 Coles “Call of Service” Lecture and Alumni Weekend, we welcome your feedback about the 2009 weekend as well as ideas for next year’s. Please direct your thoughts to alumni@pbha.org.
